Winnipeg School Division staff head back to school on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Students start classes the next day on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
A Manitoba garden
Grades 4-6 students at Weston School recently made a butterfly box garden featuring plants that are all native to Manitoba’s tallgrass prairies. Students planted a variety of prairie plants, including milkweed, sunflowers and violets, to attract different types of butterflies. Sowing took place during a visit by Living Prairie Museum director Kyle Lucyk, who explained that 99 per cent of the world’s tallgrass prairies have disappeared as a result of settlement, farming and other practices. The museum features a pocket of tallgrass prairie as it would have appeared centuries ago. Teacher Danya Jaworsky said the garden was the culmination of a cross-curricular inquiry project on habitats and communities. Students volunteered to water and weed the garden over the summer months.
