Sisler cyber team on a roll

A group of Sisler High School computer whizzes are on a roll after acing an international cyber security competition.

Sisler students attended the Cyber Patriot IV National finals in Washington D.C. earlier this spring.

While the bulk of the 24 competing teams were American, Sisler was one of two Canadian teams entered in the international exhibition category. The team’s ranking was comparable to a second place finish overall in both the open and all service divisions. Sisler’s fine showing came after the team had earlier won the Canadian Cyber Defense Challenge and earned the right to represent Canada at CyberPatriot.

The competitions are designed to deal with ever-growing security concerns in today’s digital age. Networks large and small are subject to cyber attacks, and governments, industry and militaries are no exception.

Teacher Charles Bazilewich said that through scholarships, mentorships and the competition itself, the industry is creating a feeder system to encourage and develop young IT minds who can respond to future crises with confidence.

“They’re preparing for the future—they’re anticipating that things are going to happen, but they can’t predict exactly what it’s going to be,” he said.

The students rode their success in Washington to the Skills Manitoba competition in April. In the networking competition, Sisler students secured the top three spots.
