The Director is responsible for the coordination and evaluation of Special Education programming including the identification of general system needs related to staffing, programming and space requirements.

All Special Education Department staff may be contacted by telephone (774-4525) or by fax (775-6245).

 

Under the direction of the Service Director, the staff of the Special Education Department screen referrals, prioritize, recommend student placements in appropriate Special Education programs and arrange for transportation and supports for students entering these programs.

In addition to maintaining updated class lists and waiting lists, staff provide assistance to assigned programs, facilitate entry/exit of students, collate Special Needs Funding forms, request and review teacher assistant assignments, meet with teachers, observe students, assist parents and staff in understanding available supports, facilitate student PATHs
(Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope), participate on Special Education and Division advisories and committees, and assist with program planning, needs assessment and Individual Education Plans.

In addition to generic skills, each consultant and support teacher has focused on developing skills in a specific area in order to provide support to schools on a wide variety of disabilities.

Offering professional development and support to teachers is a major activity. All Special Education staff act as advocates for Special Education students and can assist with problem-solving around specific issues.

  • Facilitate supports for students who are blind or have /low vision
  • Provide follow-up support for students who need augmentative and adapted device

Early Childhood Support Teacher

  • Intake for students entering Nursery or Kindergarten with Level II and III Special Needs

Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (.5)

  • Support for Integrated Deaf and Hard of Hearing students Level II and III
  • Facilitate intake/entry and follow-up for students in Deaf/HH Programs

Social Worker (.25)

  • Consultation for students with Profound Emotional Behavioural Disorder (EBD Level III)

Community Transition Teacher

BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT TEACHERS are assigned to specific Districts and work out of both their assigned District School Office and the Special Education Department.
