Assessment in the Winnipeg School Division

Provincial Assessment Programs

Standards tests and provincial assessment activities are developed for students in three programs: English, Français and French Immersion.  These assessments focus on the basic areas of reading and math (numeracy).

Grade 3 & 4

  • Grade 3 are assessed in Reading and Numeracy
  • Grade 3 French Immersion students are assessed on their English reading.  The math assessment is in French
  • Grade 4 French Immersion students are assessed on their French reading skills

Most of those skills are reported through the Winnipeg School Division Comprehensive Assessment Program (CAP) at the beginning of school year.

Middle Years (Grade 7/8) 

Students are assessed in:

  • Mathematics (Grade 7)
  • English Language Arts (Grade 8)
  • Français and French Immersion students are assessed in French Language Arts (Grade 8)



These skills are assessed by the classroom teacher using a variety of assessment instruments from September to January

Senior (Grade 9 - 12) Standards

Students are assessed in:

  • English Language Arts
  • Français langue seconde for Français and French Immersion students
  • Pre-Calculus
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Consumer Mathematics

The grade 9 - 12 Standard Tests are developed by the province and are written in January and June at the end of each semester.  Non-semestered schools write the exams in June.
