Classroom assistant
Objective
To assist the teacher in the classroom
Duties
To work in the classroom with the teacher in developing student skills. All activities are planned by the classroom teacher.
Training
Training is provided before starting by the classroom teacher as well as learning on the job. Volunteers should attend Division inservices.
Time Required
Once a week for two hours during school hours.
Qualifications
Volunteers should enjoy working with children in a group setting. Volunteers must be patient and supportive.
Minimum age 16 years old.
Diagnostic Learning Centre
Objective
Volunteer is matched to a student from the Diagnostic Learning Centre and works with a child in his/her home school to reinforce the learning and skills acquired at the Diagnostic Learning Centre.
Duties
To work on a one-to-one basis with a student following a program that has been designed to meet the needs of the individual student. Activities are related to reading and word study and can be carried out in English or French.
Training
Volunteers are trained at the Diagnostic Learning Centre by Centre staff as well special strategy inservices are planned.
Time Required
Training sessions at the Diagnostic Learning Centre.
Two - one hour sessions a week in student‚s home school, or one half day a week.
For one school year.
Qualifications
Volunteers have to be warm, supportive and encouraging in helping the students with the program developed at the Centre.
Location
Diagnostic Learning Centre located at plus student's home school in the Division.
Resource program assistant
Objective
To work with children to develop skills related to the school curriculum.
Duties
To assist the resource teacher in working on a one-to-one basis with students.
To work with these children to develop basic language, reading, writing, spelling or Math skills.
Training
Resource volunteers will receive training from the resource teacher and by attending Division inservices.
Time Required
Once a week for two hours, during school hours.
Qualifications
Resource volunteers should enjoy working with children on a one-to-one basis and be able to relate to them. They must be good listeners, warm and supportive.
Minimum age 16 years old.
Speech and language development assistant
Objective
To assist speech clinicians working with children to help develop their speech and language patterns.
Duties
To work with children age four and up, who are attending regular public school classes and who have speech or language problems.
Work with children is to be on a one-to-one basis, or in some instances in a small group setting.
Training
Speech clinicians of the Child Guidance Clinic will provide the training and supervision.
Time Required
One hour twice a week, or once a week for two hours.
Qualifications
Volunteers must be reliable and available on an ongoing regular basis during the school year. Must enjoy working with children.
Minimum age 16 years old
French bilingual assistant
Objective
To provide assistance to students in a bilingual program.
Duties
a) To assist students in a French bilingual classroom.
b) Volunteers may support on a one-to-one basis,
students in developing their French language skills.
Training
To be provided by the classroom and/or resource teacher.
Time Required
Two hours a week.
Qualifications
A level of French language used in the elementary
classroom.
Minimum age 16 years old
