English As An Additional Language

Introduction

Welcome to the EAL (ESL) homepage of the Winnipeg School Division. This site was created to share the latest information about English as an Additional Language in the Winnipeg School Division and its world-wide links. The acronym "EAL" stands for English as an additional language. Manitoba Education is beginning to use this acronym instead of ESL because many EAL students know more than one language.

The major AIMS of the EAL (ESL) program in the Winnipeg School Division are:

  • To provide special assistance for learning English as long as it is required.

  • To create a positive self-image for the student's language(s) and culture.

  • To introduce the new immigrant learner and his/her family to our school/community.

Isle Slotin, EAL Support Teacher, is available to provide support in the areas of Professional Development, Program Development, Curriculum Adaptation, Materials and Peer Coaching.
