Educational Technology Department

A Parent’s Guide

The Educational Technology Department supports schools to prepare students for the transition into the world of employment.  Students need to be educated on how to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) responsibly, critically and creatively.  It is through the ability to infuse ICT in the curriculum that schools will be able to model the appropriate use of information and communication technology, while supporting the students to develop their own skills in a safe learning environment.

For 2007-2008 the Department of Educational Technology has the following priorities:

  • Promote and support inquiry & experiential learning initiatives;
  • Review Internet safety programs and guidelines for students on a regular basis;
  • Supporting schools with their technology plans;
  • Exploring new information and communication technology and educational software;
  • Supporting teacher professional growth plans; and
  • Sharing and developing learning resources with educators.

Grade 11 and 12 Physical Education and Health Education Program

As of September 2008 all Grade 11 and 12 students are required to take Physical Education/Health Education classes. A new approach will be used to help students participate in an active healthy lifestyle. Students will be encouraged to take ownership of their physical activity by choosing activities suited to their interest and abilities.

The Winnipeg School Division Physical Activity Inventory may be used to help students develop their personal physical activity plan. This plan will also identify safety considerations and risks associated with their chosen activities. Once the plan is accepted by the teacher, it will be reviewed by the parent/guardian. The parent/guardian indicates approval of the plan by signing the Parent Declaration and Consent Form.

What can parents do to support their children in using information and communication technology in the different subject areas?

  • Talk with your children about media awareness (Internet, television, newspapers and other resources)
  • Ask questions to encourage them to think critically about the information they are receiving
  • When completing research and inquiry projects, ask children about their sources of information:
  • How many sources of information did they use?
  • What types of sources were used?
  • Did they only use the Internet?
  • How did they verify the source(s) of the information?
  • How will they reference the sources?
  • Ask your child how they are planning to show their understanding to the teacher, peers and/or school audience
  • Have your child reflect on which information and communication technology tool(s) they will be using and what support they will need; and
  • Be a part of your children’s online experience.

Parents are the key to their children’s Internet Safety:

  • Keep the computer in an open area
  • Beware of all requests for your personal information online
  • Respect your child’s privacy as appropriate
  • Delete unsolicited attachments
  • Model and teach respect for copyright regulations
  • Report suspicious or dangerous behaviour that makes your child feel uncomfortable, fearful or threatened
  • Keep usernames and profiles generic and anonymous
  • Avoid posting personal photos; and
  • Always keep private information private.

Please speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about school programs or special initiatives.
