Patrols
Patrolling in Canada was first organized in 1936 by Louise Staples, a teacher at Greenway School, several months before being implemented on a city-wide basis.
The Division continues to support patrols through a variety of initiatives, in partnership with the Winnipeg Police Service:
- On-site patrol inservice sessions are provided to all elementary schools by the Winnipeg Police Service patrol constables. Training occurs in June or September.
- Funding is provided to assist schools with the purchase of flags, vests, and raincoats.
- Schools are allocated funds in their school budgets to support patrol activities. Additional funding is provided to assist schools with year-end activities. Recognition pins are also provided to all graduating patrols by the Board of Trustees.
- First-place school patrol squads are honored at the annual School Board Reception for Division Patrols held at R.B. Russell School. Students and patrol supervisors from the winning squads are presented with engraved plaques.
- Patrol supervisors with 15 years of service or more are formally recognized for their efforts and presented with plaques in appreciation of their commitment to the School Safety Patrol Program.
