The South District of the Winnipeg School Division is roughly located in an area south of the Assiniboine River, east of Edgeland and Morpeth Blvds., west of the Red River and north of Fort Garry and St. Vital.

The district contains 19 schools comprised of thirteen Nursery to grade 6 schools; one Nursery to grade 8; one grade 7-8; three junior/senior high schools (7-12); and one high school (9-12).

These schools offer a wide range of programming options including: bilingual and immersion programs; alternative and multi-age programs; gifted and talented programs and all girls classes. Please check specific school web sites for more detailed information and the locations of the above programs.

Literacy through the integration of the arts, assessment

Student learning in the elementary schools of the South District is enhanced by the Literacy Through the Integration of the Arts program that has been underway for a number of years. The goals of this program are: to develop literacy through the integration of the arts and English/French language arts curriculum; to promote the use of technology for the development of literacy through the arts; to recognize and nurture emotional intelligence and its role in learning through the arts; and to cultivate an awareness and understanding of Aboriginal values and culture.

One of the priorities for the District is to strengthen assessment strategies. Secondary school teachers have been collaborating with each other and their students in developing and implementing effective assessment for learning strategies. Of particular note was a District-wide inservice for secondary teachers looking at assessment for learning across the curricula.
