Counselling and Guidance Programs
Getting through school can pose many difficult challenges. As a student, you may find yourself feeling worried, anxious or depressed, having relationship problems or having trouble with your grades. Guidance Counsellors are found at all secondary schools (and selected elementary schools) in the Winnipeg School Division, These counsellors can help you with:
- Academic development

- Personal/social development
School counsellors are most concerned with the personal, social, educational and career needs of the students, keeping in mind the best interests of the student.
The counsellor’s responsibilities may include:

- Counselling for students, groups, and families as a member of the Crisis Response Team.
- Guiding and counselling both groups of students and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
- Counselling both small groups of students and individual students with issues.
- Developing mentor programs for students.
- Consulting with teachers, staff and parents about meeting the developmental needs of students.
- Referring students with severe issues to appropriate community resources after consultation with their parents.
- Coordinating resources, human and other, for students, families, and staff members to improve student achievement (community, school, home).
- Serving as key liaison for working with students and school staff members on high aspirations for all students and for plans/support for achieving these aspirations.
Finally, the school counsellor has a responsibility to consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in working with students.
Community Liaison Services
The Winnipeg School Division recognizes the challenges that immigrant and refugee students and their families may experience in attending school in a new country. What the Community Liaison Officer can do for students:
- Assist with registration at the school
- Provide orientation to new school in student’s own language
- Provide referral to in-school supports: counselling, resource, tutoring, etc.
- Facilitate group discussions with students on common concerns
- Advocate on student’s behalf to the school
- Provide support for academic and/or family concerns
- Assist in conflict resolution
- Provide students with career information
