Prime Minister’s Award to be presented to Elmwood teacher

Prime Minister’s Award to be presented to Elmwood teacher Elmwood-Transcona MP Lawrence Toet will present Elmwood High School teacher Chantelle Cotton with one of Canada’s highest educational honours: the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The presentation takes place Tuesday, Nov. 8, 10: 15 a.m., in Elmwood’s multipurpose room. Ms. Cotton, who is one of six Manitoba educators selected for the honour, is known for using relevant literature and world issues as a starting point for projects that encourage further exploration and critical analysis on the part of students. The teacher was a key member of a team that earned the school the prestigious HP Innovations in Education technology grant. As the teacher-leader of the school’s middle-years’ student council, she motivated students to support humanitarian endeavors such as the Pakistan Relief Effort, Free the Children’s Brick-by-Brick program (in which Elmwood successfully fundraised $10,000 to build a school in Sierra Leone) and the Adopt-A-Village program. Ms. Cotton’s students—many of whom she has helped to find their own voices as young global citizens—will also play an important part in the presentation ceremony.
